Greetings my friends. This weekly devotional is geared toward providing you with spiritual nourishment and strength for this week. In order for you to be able to fulfill God's purpose in your life you must be able to draw on your inner spiritual strength. This can only be done if you are nourishing your soul so that you might prosper even as your soul prospers.

Life is All About Choices!

Jerry was the kind of guy you love to hate. He was always in a good mood and always had something positive to say. When someone would ask him how he was doing, he would reply, "If I were any better, I would be twins!" He was a unique manager because he had several waiters who had followed him around from restaurant to restaurant. The reason the waiters followed Jerry was because of his attitude. He was a natural motivator.
If an employee was having a bad day, Jerry was there telling the employee how to look on the positive side of the situation. Seeing this style really made me curious, so one day I went up to Jerry and asked him, "I don't get it! You can't be a positive person all of the time. How do you do it?"
Jerry replied, "Each morning I wake up and say to myself, 'Jerry, you have two choices today. You can choose to be in a good mood or you can choose to be in a bad mood.' I choose to be in a good mood. Each time something bad happens, I can choose to be a victim or I can choose to learn from it. I choose to learn from it. Every time someone comes to me complaining, I can choose to accept their complaining or I can point out the positive side of life. I choose the positive side of life."
"Yeah, right, it's not that easy," I protested.
"Yes, it is," Jerry said. "Life is all about choices. When you cut away all the junk, every situation is a choice. You choose how you react to situations. You choose how people will affect your mood. You choose to be in a good mood or bad mood. The bottom line: It's your choice how you live life."
I reflected on what Jerry said. Soon thereafter, I left the restaurant industry to start my own business. We lost touch, but I often thought about him when I made a choice about life instead of reacting to it.
Several years later, I heard that Jerry did something you are never supposed to do in a restaurant business: he left the back door open one morning and was held up at gunpoint by three armed robbers. While trying to open the safe, his hand, shaking from nervousness, slipped off the combination. The robbers panicked and shot him. Luckily, Jerry was found relatively quickly and rushed to the local trauma center.
After 18 hours of surgery and weeks of intensive care, Jerry was released from the hospital with fragments of the bullets still in his body.
I saw Jerry about six months after the accident. When I asked him
how he was, he replied, "If I were any better, I'd be twins. Wanna see my scars?"
I declined to see his wounds, but did ask him what had gone through his
mind as the robbery took place. "The first thing that went through my mind was that I should have locked the back door," Jerry replied. "Then, as I lay on the floor, I remembered that I had two choices: I could choose to live, or I could choose to die. I chose to live."
"Weren't you scared? Did you lose consciousness?" I asked. Jerry continued, "The paramedics were great. They kept telling me I was going to be fine. But when they wheeled me into the emergency room and I saw the expressions on the faces of the doctors and nurses, I got really scared. In their eyes, I read, 'He's a dead man.' I knew I needed to take action."
"What did you do?" I asked.
"Well, there was a big, burly nurse shouting questions at me," said Jerry. "She asked if I was allergic to anything.'Yes,' I replied. The doctors and nurses stopped working as they waited for my reply. I took a deep breath and yelled, 'Bullets!' Over their laughter, I told them, 'I am choosing to live. Operate on me as if I am alive, not dead.'"

This Week's Prayer

Lord, help me to recognize that in this life I have the ability to make a choice between feeling good or bad, accepting the positive or the negative, being the victor of the victim. Help me to always choose life over death and the good over the bad. From today forward I choose to rejoice and be happy. May this attitude of gratitude spread to all I encounter. In Jesus name. Amen.

Life Beyond The Rut!

Victoria Lowe in her book 10 Spiritual Principles of Successful Women deals with the issue of life beyond the rut. She states, "Life can take over even the best intentions and the best dreams. The years pass by before we get the chance to accomplish many of the goals we have been praying and dreaming about since childhood. It is very easy to replace dreaming and planning with maintaining. Even if we are unintentionally embracing "getting by" instead of "moving forward," we undermine our belief that dreams really can come true. We have squelched the spirit too many times. No wonder the dreaded "rut" we all refer to takes the breath and energy out of us like a sickness. Depression can set in, and we stop looking forward to the days ahead."

God never created us to be in a "rut." But the reality is that many of us end up in this lonely, depressing, foreboding place. Remember, this was never intended to be your destination in life. Pull yourself out of that "rut" by doing the following:

1. Re-visit your dream (what is it that you really desire in life?)
2. Assess your progress (are you on track with where you want to be?)
3. Create a checklist (what must you do in order to see your dream become a reality?)
4. Never stop praying (continue to lay your dream before God, knowing that God hears you and answers prayers)
5. Cleanse your environment (remove yourself from the people and things that keep you from dreaming - i.e., the nay-sayers and haters)
6. Organize your life (dreams need a fertile ground to incubate and grow - organize your office, your car, your computer, your world)
This Week's Prayer

Eternal God, I praise you today for blessing me with the ability to dream. So many great people before me have actualized their dreams (Martin Luther King, Jr., Harriet Tubman, Oprah Winfrey, Barack Obama, etc.) Continue to create a dream in my soul and cause me to believe even in the face of my unbelief. On this day I refuse to enter into a "rut." Give me the power and the strength to live life beyond the "rut." In Jesus name, Amen.

Water-Walking Faith!

"For we walk by faith and not by sight." 2 Corinthians 5:7

What is it that you really want to see manifested in your life? Do you want a fulfilling career and not just a job that pays the bills? Do you want to start your own business, write a book, or become a philanthropist? We all have desires and dreams but today I want to know if you have faith enough to believe that your dreams will come to pass? In Matthew 14:22-33 we find Peter stepping out on faith and asking Jesus to allow him to not only witness a miracle but to be a major player in that miracle. Peter's faith was being stretched and pushed to its limits. The water certainly was not welcoming, the conditions were not in his favor to succeed, and uncertainty must have been the emotion of the day. But Peter stepped out of the boat and exemplified some "Water-Walking Faith."

Well, the economy isn't at its best, gas prices are high and the value of the dollar is low. The conditions are not looking favorable for your success - but this only means that your situation is ripe for a miracle and pregnant with possibility. Step out of your boat of comfort, safety and ease and possess some "water-walking faith" today. I can't wait to hear the testimonies to come!
This Week's Prayer
Gracious, loving, kind God, bless me today as I move to the next level of spiritual maturity. As I embrace this "water-walking faith" be my guide and my protector. Help me to use the gifts and talents that you have given me to change this world for the better and show someone else the power resident in an Almighty God. Enlarge my territory. I claim it in Jesus name. Amen.

Are You Really Connected?

"I am the vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing" (John 15:5).

Are you connected? Normally this question conjures up images of knowing the right people, who can make the right associations for you. However there is a connection that is far more important than this. The connection I'm referring to is the one that is made with our Savior, Jesus the Christ. When we are connected to Christ we have an assurance that we can do all things because Christ strengthens or empowers us.

Not too long ago I was having trouble with my truck. It's a V-8 engine and therefore it requires a great deal of electricity in order to start. Each time I would turn it on the engine would labor as though it didn't want to start. Upon opening my hood I discovered corrosion on the battery posts, so I poured some Coca Cola on the cables and the corrosion melted away (this visual alone caused me to stop drinking Coca Cola).  As soon as the corrosion melted away and the connection was re-established the car started perfectly. My point here is that my car was laboring and threatening not to run because the connection to the battery (the source of power was being cut off). I am convinced that many people are laboring, tired, weak, ineffective, unproductive and not performing at their peak because they are not connected to Christ.

Let me encourage you to check your connection today and make certain that you remain connected to Christ, because the truth is apart from Christ you can do nothing.
This Week's Prayer

Dear God, connect me to the ultimate source of power and purpose, your son Jesus Christ. Help me to remain focused on the vine (Christ) who provides nourishment, strength, and power to the branch (me). Through introspection and deep reflection keep me aware of those times when I seek to operate outside of this connection. And may those times be swiftly replaced by prayer, meditation and fasting. Amen.

Suggestion is Power!
How many times have you heard it said, "Just believe you can do it and you can?" Whatever the task, if begun with the belief that you can do it, it will be done perfectly. Often belief empowers a person to do what others consider impossible. The act of believing is the starting force, the generating power that leads to accomplishment. - Claude M. Bristol.

Mr. Bristol seems to be describing the concept of faith as outlined in the gospel according to Mark 11:24. It reads, "Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours." (NIV) When will we ever truly embrace this ancient truth and walk in the success and victory that is our birthright. It really doesn't matter what it is you want to accomplish... if you ask believing you will receive it.

Perhaps it's time we asked for more compassion, understanding and righteousness in our nation. Or maybe its the time to ask for peace in the world. We certainly could use less greed and more philanthropy. What is it that you desire in your own life? Let this be the year that you free yourself from debt, find that special someone, start that new business, take that dream vacation, become whole and healthy in mind, body and soul. Whatever it is just keep believing that it's yours and I'll be awaiting the testimonies.
This Week's Prayer
God my friend, bless me today to believe that whatever I ask for I can receive. Help me to recognize that at the point of my psychological and spiritual commitment, the universe comes together and conspires for my success. Help me to be a believer in you, your power and your promise found in Mark 11. Amen.

Are You Growing?

"The purpose of life for humankind is growth, just as the purpose of life for trees and plants is growth. We are formed for growth and we are under the necessity of growing. It is essential to our happiness that we should continuously advance."  - An excerpt from "The Science of Being Great" by Wallace Wattles

Have you ever encountered someone who has become stagnant and complacent in their lives? Perhaps that someone is you and you feel stuck. You're stuck in an unsatisfying career, or a financial rut, or a meaningless relationship. The challenge for you today is to begin evaluating your life circumstances and relationships from the vantage point of growth. Anything that is not growing is dying. If it is in fact true that growth is essential to our happiness then it would reason that money, power, prestige or position have nothing to do with true success and fulfillment. It would then reason that how much we continuously advance is the only barometer of success that we can use.

As Christians we must also recognize, as so eloquently stated by Dr. Jurgen Moltman, that "when there is no longer any prospect of meaningful life, people turn to meaningless violence." If we are not growing in our pursuit for meaning in this life we will ultimately attempt to destroy the growth around us. This is the "one bad apple can spoil the whole bunch" principle. Perhaps that answers the question, "Why is there so much drama in my life?" Look around you. Are the people growing or dying; are you advancing or have you hit a glass ceiling at your job? The minute you expose yourself to positive, growing people and situations the more meaningful and joyful your life will become.
This Week's Prayer

Creator God, my prayer today centers around growth. Help me to evaluate my current station in life. If there are people or circumstances that are keeping me from growing give me the power to remove them immediately. Make me like the tree which is planted by the rivers of water that brings forth fruit in its season. Amen.
